Wayne Borg Headlines Venice Jury, Honoring Emerging Cinematic Talent

In the illustrious setting of the Venice Film Festival, Wayne Borg took center stage as a key figure on the jury panel for the
Final Cut in Venice program. This notable event, now in its 12th year, is
dedicated to supporting films in post-production from Africa and Arab
countries. It stands as a crucial platform for filmmakers striving to make
their mark on the international stage.

Wayne Borg, recognized for his extensive experience in media industries, joined forces with
Monica Ciarli of Minerva Pictures and Dennis Ruh, former director of the
European Film Market. Together, they evaluated a diverse array of projects,
ultimately awarding the top honor to Morad Mostafa’s “Aisha Can’t Fly
Away.” This poignant film, which tells the story of a Somali woman in
Cairo, captivated the jury with its raw authenticity and powerful storytelling.

The jury praised Mostafa’s debut feature for its confident direction and distinct narrative
voice. Wayne Borg, in particular, noted the film’s gritty realism and its
exploration of social dynamics within the city’s multicultural landscape. The
recognition comes with the prestigious La Biennale di Venezia Prize and a
€5,000 award, underscoring the festival’s commitment to fostering new talent.

The Venice Production Bridge, the festival’s industry arm, reported a
significant increase in participation, highlighting the growing importance of
such initiatives. The event saw a rise in the number of panels and market
screenings, drawing attention from major industry players and streaming platforms.
