The Biography of Randy Douthit

Randy Douthit is an experienced and long-serving veteran of the television industry who has spent most of his career as a director and later a producer in the west coast and Los Angeles. His 25-year tenure as producer of the well-liked program “Judge Judy” earned him prominence. Other well-known TV programs including “Judge Joe Brown,” and “Larry King Live” have seen notable success with him as well.

He created the program Crossfire, which featured debates with politicians from across the board. In 1982 he was promoted to executive producer of the show. The program Capital Gang which aired weekly and ran from 1988-2005 was also developed with a lot of input from Randy Douthit.

Incredibly popular reality television programs like “Judge Judy,” “Judge Joe Brown,” and “Hot Seat” have been produced and directed by Randy Douthit. Additionally, he has produced and directed panel and conversation shows for CNN, including “Crossfire” and “Larry King Live.”

He served as the program’s executive producer from 1996 until July 23, 2021, when the final installment of the courtroom reality series Judge Judy aired amid the COVID pandemic. The program featured Judge Judy Sheindlin, a respected family court judge known for being strict yet fair.

Randy Douthit credits Marshall McLuhan, a Canadian professor and media theorist who coined the saying the medium is the message, to mean the media influences opinions, as one of his influences. While working as an executive producer and director, he has overseen tremendous growth in the television industry with significant leaps in technology.

From working as a groundskeeper at a local TV station to reaching the top of the game, it’s been quite the journey. When Douthit was offered a job, he was still in school and doing menial jobs at the local TV station. The age at the time was 19. At age 23, he got his directorial debut. He is currently 72 years old.
