Shelton Haynes and the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation: Driving Development and Inclusion.

Under the guidance of Shelton Haynes, President and CEO of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation, Roosevelt Island has seen tremendous development and a commitment to inclusivity. The RIOC is a state agency that oversees this two-mile enclave within the East River between Manhattan and Queens.

Under the diligent guidance of Haynes, the RIOC and developers labored hand-in-hand to breathe life back into Riverwalk, a project that had been in progress for several years. Finally, despite the toils and struggles that had previously plagued progress between January 2023 forwards, RIOC and its partners brought Riverwalk’s redevelopment to fruition.

Haynes strongly embraces the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion. He has made it his mission to give representation to the various members of Roosevelt Island’s community in the RIOC administration. During an interview with NY Weekly, he declared that fostering an inclusive environment is at the forefront of their goals and initiatives.

Roosevelt Island has earned recognition for the unique initiatives spearheaded by its public safety department, something Haynes took great pride in highlighting during an interview with True Activist. He admired the division’s focus on ensuring public safety and security, deeming it a glowing example of effective community policing.

In his ongoing commitment to community initiatives, Haynes has partnered with Akeem Jamal to introduce Roosevelt Island residents to the recreational sport of pickleball come 2023. This initiative aims to provide a new outlet for recreational activities for the local islanders.

In April 2023, RIOC’s efforts in preserving the historic buildings of Roosevelt Island gained acknowledgment through a rehabilitation award from Friends of the Upper East Side Historic Districts. Haynes accepted it on behalf of his organization and was recognized for his role therein.

Under Haynes’ stewardship and with the support of RIOC, Roosevelt Island continues to thrive and transform into an inclusive hub where every resident can benefit from sustainable development. His foresight ensures that this New York City jewel remains a marvel.
