Shelton Haynes

Shelton Haynes is an activist, business executive, and community development expert. He has worked with communities across the United States and abroad, tackling urban development, affordable housing, governance, and education issues. His work has been featured in several publications, such as the Atlantic Magazine and The New York Times. Haynes is serving as President & CEO of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation.

Haynes started his career at Boston’s Roxbury Tenants Development Corporation (RTDC), where he managed public housing projects for nearly three years. During this time, he helped to develop the community organizing concept of RTDC’s Leadership Development Program. He led this program to obtain $15 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Haynes has held executive positions in community development, education, and financial services throughout his career. He has served as President & CEO of Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation since March 2021. Under his presidency, the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation has committed to building a new sports and recreation facility (pavilion), a new public school, and a new 2,000-seat theater on Roosevelt Island.

Shelton Haynes has been a successful leader and an excellent coach. He is known for creating a clear vision and executing it while maintaining continuous progress. Haynes is known for leading his organizations through adaptive thinking, strategic planning, agile design processes, and user-centered design principles.

Haynes has been very active in community progress programs. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of YouthBuild USA, providing education and job training to low-income families.  He also serves on their National Advisory Council, where he works to expand program reach beyond New York City and provide sustainable opportunities in underserved communities across the United States.

Haynes recently focused on implementing Roosevelt Island’s new master plan. He has prioritized ensuring that the island remains a beautiful and safe place for families. This aligns with his focus on creating positive environments for young people and families. His leadership is expected to ensure that Roosevelt Island thrives for generations.
