Kelcy Warren Grew Energy Transfer to $90 Billion

Energy Transfer’s revenue climbed from $1 billion in late 2003 to $17 billion by 2012, then peaked near $90 billion at the close of 2022. Kelcy Warren, who co-founded the company with Ray Davis in 1996, has called that arc a meaningful chronology built through a long sequence of acquisitions, pipeline conversions, and bets on where American energy production was headed next.

Early Years of Scraping By

The company’s first years were lean. Warren and Davis floundered for a while just covering payroll before the 2001 collapse of Enron cleared out a wave of competitors that had tried to copy its model. Energy Transfer’s $265 million purchase of Aquila, modest by later standards, gave the company a foothold it used to grow into a larger player. A Barnett Shale acquisition in 2004 and a Houston pipeline purchase for Gulf Coast access followed, setting up a pattern of deals that each opened a new region or product line.

Scaling Into a National Network

The 2011 purchase of Southern Union for $7.9 billion brought in the Trunkline pipeline, which Energy Transfer later helped merge into what became the Dakota Access Pipeline system. The company also picked up Florida Gas Transmission, the state’s dominant natural gas supplier, and in 2021 added Enable Midstream to extend its reach into Oklahoma’s Anadarko Basin and the Haynesville shale. Two more acquisitions in 2022 rounded out the buying spree, including Lotus Midstream, which gave Kelcy Warren the Cushing to Gulf Coast connection he had wanted for years. Kelcy Warren has said none of the big purchases ever felt like a gamble to him, even when analysts raised eyebrows at the pace. Today the company operates nearly 125,000 miles of pipeline, a network built one deal at a time from a business that once struggled to make payroll in East Texas. Warren still points to that early period as the foundation for everything that followed, arguing that the discipline learned while the company was small shaped how it evaluated every acquisition afterward.
