How Colcom Foundation is Fighting the Sixth Mass Extinction
Extinction is a scary word, but it isn’t one that should be taken lightly. There have been five mass extinction events in Earth’s history and according to scientists, we’re living in the sixth. The good news is that we as a species can curb the effects of this extinction and preserve human society if we act now. That’s the goal of the Colcom Foundation and why they’re taking steps to cut down on overpopulation and environmental damage.
The Web of Life Hangs in the Balance
The ecosystem is a complex web of life. Like a spider’s web, a disruption in one area can reverberate throughout the entire web. The main difference here is that when the ecosystem is disrupted, the effects can take years if not decades to feel. Cordelia S. May realized this when she was just 23 years old back in 1952 and this knowledge led her on her path of working to protect the environment and eventually the founding of Colcom in 1996.
The Ecosystem is Resilient
There is no denying that a lot of damage has been done to the ecosystem, however, it is very resilient and can bounce back if the damage is stopped fast enough. Right now, things are very difficult, but the Colcom Foundation is working to push back against overpopulation and environmental destruction, the two main forces that are fueling the Sixth Mass Extinction.
The Practical and Moral
The Colcom Foundation has two guiding principles: the Practical and the Moral. The Practical principle states that the loss of biodiversity caused by the sixth mass extinction is the greatest threat to human civilization and survival. The Moral principle states that confronting and ending the sixth mass extinction is humanity’s greatest moral imperative.
Led by these two principals, the Colcom Foundation is working hard to protect the environment. They advocate for better birth control education and immigration policies as well as working to protect the environment from the ravages of industrialization. Through their efforts, Cordelia S. May’s legacy is preserved.
