Flutterwave Joins Forces with EFCC to Launch Cybercrime Research Centre in Nigeria

In a landmark move to combat internet crime and fortify the security of online transactions, Flutterwave, a prominent African electronic payment company, has formed a strategic alliance with Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to establish a cutting-edge Cybercrime Research Centre. This first-of-its-kind partnership in West Africa under President Bola Tinubu’s administration was formalized on June 14, 2024, by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Abuja.

The MoU was signed by Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga Agboola and EFCC Secretary Mohammadu Hammajoda in the presence of distinguished attendees, including EFCC Chair Ola Olukoyede, Director of the American Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Christopher Gray, and other senior officials from both the EFCC and the FBI. During the event, Agboola emphasized Flutterwave’s commitment to promoting secure and safe transactions, stating, “This initiative underscores our commitment to creating a fraud-free financial ecosystem and leading the charge in safeguarding transactions across Africa.”

The Cybercrime Research Centre, to be established at the new EFCC Academy, will serve as a hub for advanced research, training, and capacity building in the fight against financial crimes. The center will focus on several key areas, including advanced fraud detection and prevention, collaborative research and policy development, youth empowerment and capacity building, and technological advancement and resource enablement.

Flutterwave, well-versed in the tactics employed by internet fraudsters known as “Yahoo Boys,” will train anti-corruption agents using sophisticated tech tools and techniques to effectively detect and prevent these crimes. Agboola stressed the necessity of the cybercrime research center, given the prevalence of internet fraud, which, if left unchecked, could erode the stability and hard-earned trust in financial systems.

Olukoyede commended Flutterwave for its impressive strides across Africa, stating, “The EFCC is impressed with the strides and expanse of Flutterwave across Africa. This partnership marks a significant leap forward in our efforts to combat financial crimes and ensure a secure financial landscape for Nigerians.” He added that the cybercrime research center would significantly enhance the EFCC’s capabilities to prevent, detect, and prosecute financial crimes.

The center aims to develop and implement cutting-edge technologies for detecting and preventing financial fraud while offering comprehensive training for law enforcement and industry professionals to combat modern financial crimes effectively. Additionally, it will provide 500 youths with high-end training and research opportunities, equipping them with the skills needed to navigate and excel in the digital economy.

The Cybercrime Research Centre will also facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing between the public and private sectors to combat financial crimes, including cryptocurrency-related crimes, by providing access to advanced tools, technologies, and resources. As the payments ecosystem continues to evolve, the prevalence of financial fraud remains a significant challenge, threatening the stability and trust in economic systems. The partnership between Flutterwave and the EFCC exemplifies how public-private collaboration can effectively address these issues, paving the way for a more secure and prosperous economy in Nigeria and across Africa.
