Flutterwave Empowers Nigerian E-Commerce with American Express Integration

Flutterwave has announced that its merchants can now accept American Express transactions in a move set to revolutionize online payments in Nigeria. This development, unveiled on August 20, 2024, marks a significant milestone in the fintech company’s mission to connect Africa to the global economy through seamless payment solutions.

The integration allows American Express cardholders, whether using personal, business, or corporate cards, to make direct payments to e-commerce businesses in Nigeria that utilize Flutterwave’s platform. This expansion of payment options is not limited to Nigeria alone; Flutterwave plans to extend this service to merchants in Tanzania, Rwanda, Ghana, and Uganda soon, further solidifying its position as a pan-African financial technology leader.

Flutterwave’s latest initiative benefits merchants and consumers. For Nigerian online retailers, this partnership opens doors to a new customer base comprising American Express cardholders from across Africa and worldwide. This expanded reach has the potential to significantly boost sales and broaden market penetration for businesses of all sizes.

From the consumer perspective, American Express cardholders now have increased flexibility in their online shopping experiences. The collaboration enhances the locations where these cardholders can use their cards in Nigeria, effectively strengthening American Express’s global network presence on the African continent.

Olugbenga ‘GB’ Agboola, the founder and CEO of Flutterwave, expressed enthusiasm about the new offering. He emphasized the company’s commitment to bridging payment gaps between Africa and the rest of the world. Agboola highlighted that this integration simplifies the payment process for American Express cardholders and enhances the overall experience for e-commerce businesses using Flutterwave’s services.

The CEO’s vision aligns perfectly with Flutterwave’s ethos of enabling businesses to “start locally and sell globally.” By incorporating American Express as a payment method, Flutterwave is taking another step towards realizing this vision, making transactions faster and more straightforward for a broader range of international customers.

American Express’s representative, Briana Wilsey, Vice President and General Manager of Global Network Services EMEA, echoed Agboola’s sentiments. Wilsey described the collaboration as a “win-win” situation, emphasizing how it expands payment choices for African businesses and consumers. The partnership gives Nigerian e-commerce merchants access to American Express’s global customer base and increases the utility of American Express cards within Nigeria.

This development follows other significant milestones for Flutterwave. On August 1, 2024, the company received a Payment Service Provider license (Enhanced Category) from the Bank of Ghana. This license empowers Flutterwave to operate independently in Ghana without relying on third-party services, thereby streamlining payment processes for businesses and customers in the country.

Flutterwave’s expansion is broader than that of West Africa. In May 2024, the company extended its operations to Mozambique, demonstrating its commitment to providing comprehensive payment solutions across the African continent.

Integrating with American Express builds upon Flutterwave’s history of forging strategic partnerships to enhance cross-border trading. In 2021, the company collaborated with PayPal to enable African merchants to receive payments from PayPal users worldwide. However, it’s worth noting that this service is currently available to merchants in select African countries, excluding Nigeria.

As Flutterwave continues to innovate and expand its services, the American Express integration represents another significant step in its journey to simplify and democratize online payments across Africa. Flutterwave plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of e-commerce and digital transactions on the continent by continually broadening its range of accepted payment methods and expanding its geographical reach.
