Earth and Its People in the Balance: The Colcom Foundation
The 21st-century culture has a problem with limits, as had many cultures preceding it. Somehow, goes the ethic, technology will solve whatever dangers and lack we now face. Yet all too often, nature reminds us that human ingenuity — while impressive — does not always offset the exploitation of natural resources.
Fortunately, forward thinking people, like Cordelia S. May, saw the destructive patterns of population burgeoning, food shortages, energy depletion and the pollution of land, sea and atmosphere at an early age. Moreover, they took resolute action to reverse the dangerous trends and improve human relations in the process. In the case of Mrs. May, the action became the Colcom Foundation.
The Colcom Foundation maintains two emphases: the region of southwestern Pennsylvania is its geographical focus. The other priority is the conviction that overpopulation is at the root of so many environmental and societal problems. Consequently, the Foundation directs its efforts toward reversing ecological damage while fostering the unique cultural history of this area. Since southwestern PA experienced the arrival of major industrial actors, its natural integrity and cultural richness have deteriorated. In response, the Colcom Foundation directs funds toward the remediation of this decline.
Overpopulation strains the carrying capacity, i.e. the ability to supply and sustain the existential needs of inhabitants, of an environment. When overpopulation continues unabated, extinction of species will follow and humans are not immune. Accordingly, the Foundation gives to organizations like the Population Media Center and the Center for Immigration Studies to educate the public regarding the responsible generation and migration of human beings.
Other recipients include the Hollow Oak Land Trust and the Westmoreland Land Trust for their work in preserving the natural resources and cultural history of the area. The Colcom Foundation also supports legal aid and scientific research to protect natural ecosystems. Visit this page for related information.
