Colcom Foundation – Saving the Planet One Day at a Time
Most of the time when disaster strikes it is easy to realize the threat. Hurricanes, wildfires, volcanos, all of these natural disasters have clear warning signs most of the time and can be prepared for and dealt with. However, the worst natural disaster of all, mass extinction, happens so slowly that there is no warning and no way of dealing with it once it is too late.
The Founding of Colcom
Cordelia S. May realized this when she was just 23 back in 1952. As a result, she dedicated her life to protecting the environment and ensuring that future generations will have a healthy planet to live on. In 1996, she founded the Colcom Foundation to carry on her legacy. Passing away in 2005, the foundation is doing just that by addressing the ecological crises that we face daily.
Two Key Factors
According to Cordelia S. May’s philosophy, two main factors are pushing the planet toward the point of no return: overpopulation and ecological destruction. Today, the Colcom Foundation is working hard to address these issues by educating people on birth control and family planning as well as working with other organizations to protect areas from industrial encroachment.
The Colcom Foundation also advocates for intelligent immigration reform to keep the population of old vs. young demographics balanced in America. This is because an aging population will put stress on the nation’s economy if there aren’t enough young people around to balance it out.
Stopping the Sixth Mass Extinction
There have been many mass extinctions in the Earth’s history, and right now we’re going through number six. The real threat here is that the loss of biodiversity could collapse the food chain which would be the end of human civilization as we know it. Realizing this threat, the Colcom Foundation is working to preserve the world’s biodiversity so that the damage of the “Sixth Mass Extinction” can be kept to a minimum.
