Kelcy Warren’s East Texas Roots Shaped a Pipeline Empire

Pipelines were part of Kelcy Warren‘s life long before he built a company around them. Raised in Gladewater and White Oak, two small communities in rural East Texas, Warren grew up as the son of a pipeline field hand who spent his whole career at Sunoco.

That upbringing, Hart Energy wrote in a 2023 Hall of Fame profile, helps explain why Energy Transfer is more than a business to its co-founder. Leading a major pipeline company is a way of life his family instilled in him.

Taking the Best Offer

Warren’s professional start was practical. After graduating from the University of Texas at Arlington, he accepted the best job offer available, at Lone Star Gas Co. He later joined Endevco, a pipeline and refining company that fell into financial difficulty. Tasked with finding a buyer, he met investors Ray C. Davis and Ben Cook, and the three ended up buying Endevco themselves before reselling it for a profit.

They used much of the proceeds to start Energy Transfer in 1996 with about 200 miles of natural gas pipelines in East Texas.

Coming Full Circle

Kelcy Warren’s career reached an emotional high point in 2012. Energy Transfer acquired Sunoco, his father’s longtime employer, in a deal worth $5.3 billion. His father had died in 1992 and never saw it happen.

“It was just emotional for me,” Warren told Hart Energy. He said he talked to his father about the deal in his prayers around the day it closed. He also stressed that the purchase made financial sense for unitholders, and that sentiment alone should never justify an acquisition.

The company Kelcy Warren helped found has since grown into a sprawling network. Acquisitions after the Enron collapse, organic projects like the Dakota Access Pipeline and a long run of midstream consolidation all contributed. Recent deals for Enable Midstream, Lotus Midstream and Crestwood Equity Partners extended its reach further.

Today Kelcy Warren serves as executive chairman and continues to look for assets that fit. His philosophy remains rooted in the trade he learned growing up: a good pipeliner never ends up with a perfect system. Refer to this article for related information.
