The Colcom Foundation Carries on the Legacy of Cordelia S. May

Cordelia S. May wasn’t like other people. Back when she was just 23 in 1952, she realized that the planet was changing in ways that were impossible to detect on a day-to-day basis. This led her to the conclusion that overpopulation and environmental destruction are the biggest threats to the future of humanity. She would spend many years working to come up with practical solutions to these problems and implement them in ways that would bring immediate benefit. Though she would pass away in 2005, the Colcom Foundation, founded in 1996, would carry on her legacy.

The Overpopulation Problem

Understanding the problem of overpopulation doesn’t require a genius intellect, just a willingness to accept the facts. Cordelia S. May knew that we live on a finite planet with finite resources. This being the case, it is impossible for the planet to support a population that grows without end.

To address this concern, the Colcom Foundation seeks to educate people in regard to family planning. This will help cut down on the amount of unplanned and unwanted children. They also support the idea of reducing immigration to the US in order to shrink the population and keep the average age of the population in balance.

Protecting Ecology

There is a saying that says that ecology and economy can’t be separated. Understanding this truth, Cordelia S. May has worked hard to preserve the environment and keep industrialization at bay. After all, you can have a planet without an economy, but not an economy without a planet.

The Colcom Foundation has focused most of its ecological projects on southwestern Pennsylvania. They work with other organizations such as Westmoreland Land Trust, WeConservePA, and Hollow Oak Land Trust to conserve the natural lands and prevent the expansion of industry into them in order to lessen their negative environmental impacts.
