Nonprofit Organization Philanthrophy Rights Advocacy Group

Colcom Foundation

The Colcom Foundation works in the southwestern region of Pennsylvania, and the organization has a long and storied history that began with a notable heiress, named Cordelia S. May, who lived in the Pittsburgh area. She was concerned over the negative impact that giant manufactures in the region were having on the fragile and intricate ecosystems that are part of this gorgeous nature area.

Mrs. May was also worried that the influx of immigrants to the region were going to put too much of a strain on the already strained resources that citizens depended on like clean drinking water, nature areas, where wildlife and native plants could live and grow unhindered, and other related economic and ecologic matters. She was involved with some controversial efforts with regards to birth control and limiting immigration back during a time period where almost nobody was sounding any alarms.

After Mrs. May died in 2005, others brought the Colcom Foundation to life.

Today, Colcom Foundation’s reach has expanded to involve many different causes one of which remains protecting the environment and natural resources that are located in this general area. A lot of effort by the foundation has moved to education regarding pollution, manufacturing processes and use of pesticides and other chemicals by these larger companies and by indiscriminate use of resources without thought to the potential harm that these activities can cause.

The Colcom Foundation is still involved with promoting better ways to curb the strain on the natural resources and wildlife in the region through family planning, birth control and immigration reform among other efforts. The foundation is heavily involved in local conservation efforts and also supports political and legal pushes for greater community awareness and penalty increases for those entities that continue to avoid following regulations designed to protect our planet.
